My Story

My name is Dávid Mágyel, and I am a pianist and piano teacher. My intention here is to share with you what I’ve learned over the years in the hope that it might encourage you to practice, create some new songs, learn to play the piano, etc.

My story with the piano:

I have been playing the piano since I was five years old. It was not my idea, and at that time I was not really happy about it, but my parents saw me as the new Mozart, so I did my duties. After 3 years of playing the piano, my teacher asked me to quit, but I told her that my parents don’t let me. So I studied classical piano in Slovakia for twelve years and when my parents finally realized that piano is not my thing… I started to like it. They asked me to try something else, because I am not really talented, and they were worried about my future, but I told them that I don’t want to do anything else, I decided to be a pianist. I moved to Hungary to continue my piano studies in a jazz-conservatory for another three years.

After my studies, the passion I was feeling still needed to be “unlocked”, so I started to travel,  playing in different places, in different jazz formations (even opera jazz) and I tried mixing various styles so as to develop my own sound, a sound that would allow me to truly express what I was feeling.

I am now 28 years old and I live in Bergen (Norway). Why Bergen? Because I am only happy when it rains.

I still see myself just as a young aspiring jazz pianist – who mostly plays progressive electric-psychedelic pop rock -, but I am working as a piano teacher too, because I am good at it.
I never wanted to be a piano teacher,  but somehow it works. In fact, wherever I go, whatever else I try to do in my life, in the end I am a piano teacher again. Destiny? Maybe. I don’t know but through me people find new inspiration to practice, they start to create songs, the parents and kids are happy, they say that it is fun, even the teenagers say that it is motivating and useful to learn the piano with me.

Anyway, here I am now, and here is my Norwegian website, where you can find information about my piano lessons and my books, you can check out my music, my students, or my tutorial videos. So let’s start!
